Our amazing ward playgroup planner organized a trip to a nearby farm to go apple picking yesterday morning. However, John was done at school at noon and wanted to go apple picking too, so ditching playgroup, we went in the afternoon. We had a great time. On our way there we were discussing how odd it is that we are happy to drive 30 min. to pick our own apples and pay more for them than the store charges. It's for the experience right?:)
Aiden was a great little apple picker. He insisted on carrying the bag himself until it was about 1/2 full and became too heavy. He was taught how to properly pick an apple by twisting it until it comes off and away he went. He picked all but about five and was excited about every one of them.
Abby also had a great time but was a little less productive. She just wanted to run around and pick the apples off the ground, wanting to eat every one of them. So
Aiden's job was picking, John's was taking pictures and mine was keeping Abby from eating rotten apples. This one doesn't look so bad.
Now John and I are not
generally big fans of apples, but they are delicious. The day turned out to be a lot of fun, we got a good bunch of apples which includes 3 different varieties. Here is the fruits of our labour minus about six apples already eaten. Thanks

i'm glad you guys went so we could actually see what the whole "apple picking" thing looked like! ha!
We went apple picking over at a friends house a few weeks ago and had a great time. Carter loved climbing the ladder to reach higher apples. So great.
I totally understand about paying for the experience, not just the fruit. It was family time. Memory time. Who remembers picking up some apples at Safeway?
I'm so glad you were able to go even if you did ditch the playgroup. We sobbed every minute at your absence (ok... will you at least believe we noticed your absence?). Congrats on the great haul!
Oh, that sounds so great! It's also doubly great you could go with John. You have to grab whatever time you can get with him, now that he's in school.
Yum, they all look nice and juicy. What are you going to make with them? Post any good recipes you find!
Sounds like so much fun, and looks like a really awesome orchard! We went to a friend's house who was trying to get rid of apples from her tree and picked a laundry basket full. Parker loved sitting on Shaun's shoulder to grab the high ones, and Naomi did exactly what Abby did (ran around and took one bite out of every one that she could access), but the highlight was probably when Shaun shook the tree and a bunch of them came down (we were just making pies and such so we didn't mind if they got a little bruised). One hit Parker in the head and he thought it was HILARIOUS!!!
So far we've just been eating them because they are just so good. We're going to make some caramel apples though in the next couple of days and I'll probably make some apple crisp as we aren't big pie fans.
